Skaneateles BOE candidates: Doreen E. Bianchi

School board candidate Doreen Bianchi

School board candidate Doreen Bianchi

Bianchi has lives in Skaneateles for one year. She currently teaches reading and college learning strategies at Onondaga Community College and works part time at the County Ewe in Skaneateles. Her past work and volunteer experience include: teaching at a primary, secondary and college level, serving on the board of trustees at Cazenovia College, serving on a governor’s task force on asbestos, working with U.S. congressional committees on business and industry and working in a managerial capacity with a family demolition and hazardous waste removal company.

Why did you decide to run for the school board? “I’m someone who is always volunteering to do something and I’ve been looking for an opportunity to serve some organization or capacity, so I saw the ad for the school board and thought ‘this would be perfect’ because I’ve taught everything from K to 12 and at the college level too.”

Are there any specific issues you want to address if elected to the board? “This school district is facing a lot of challenges … and that’s how to produce quality education without having to continuously raise revenues and/or cut services or programs. I see that as the big challenge, and because I’ve run corporations, I’m hoping I can contribute to that discussion and to that challenge. I don’t propose to have all the answers because these are difficult times and difficult questions but I think I am a very good listener and what I would consider a facilitator, so I can listen to the taxpayer and the district and try to see what they feel is important, but the bottom line is I’m always going to look at what is best for the kids.”

What are your thoughts on the superintendent search? “I was somewhat surprised that they were not able to come up with a suitable candidate and that could be troublesome for a school district”

“Any transition is hard, because with changes some challenges, and I see this as something that really does need to be settled.”
